Liberal Democrats have welcomed the announcement that George Osborne is to abandon his fiscal rule and called on the Government to move Government spending to a 'war footing' to combat the impact of a Brexit Recession.

The Liberal Democrat shave long said the fiscal rule would restrict growth, but it's impacts would be even more severe given the impact of a Brexit vote. They said that now is the time to dramatically increase spending on infrastructure to boost the economy.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has committed to fight the next General Election on a platform taking Britain back into Europe.

Since Britain voted for Brexit on Thursday thousands of people have joined the Liberal Democrats.

Tim Farron has now said that in any upcoming national election he will promise to rejoin the European Union.

The economic uncertainty will affect jobs, people's homes and livelihoods.

The Liberal Democrats accept the result of the referendum but plan to make the case for us to rejoin the heart of Europe.

    Tim Farron said:

"For many millions of people, this was not just a vote about Europe. It was a howl of anger at politicians and institutions who they felt they were out of touch and had let them down.

"The British people deserve the chance not to be stuck with the appalling consequences of a Leave campaign that stoked that anger with the lies of Farage, Johnson and Gove.

"The Liberal Democrats will fight the next election on a clear promise to restore British prosperity and role in the world, with the UK in the European Union, not out.

I am devastated and I am angry. Today we woke to a deeply divided country.

Nigel Farage's vision for Britain has won this vote, but it is not a vision I accept.

An institution that we built, that delivered peace, that promoted equality, kept us safe and opened the doors of opportunity, will no longer play part of Britain's future.

Speaking following the referendum result, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Tim Farron said:

"I'm devastated and I am angry. Today we wake to a deeply divided country.

"Nigel Farage's vision for Britain has won this vote, but it is not a vision I share.

"Young people voted to remain by a considerable margin, but were out voted. They were voting for their future, yet it has been taken from them.

    Dear Friend,

This morning with my kids all I could think about was the family who've woken up with their lives changed forever.

Yesterday a mum, who left home to do her job to serve her constituents, was cruelly and brutally taken from them. Her husband and their children are in my thoughts and prayers.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron and Paddy Ashdown have paid tribute to Jo Cox MP who was murdered this afternoon.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said:

Commenting on the allegations of abuse by Clement Freud, a Liberal Democrat spokesperson said:

"These allegations are horrific. We are desperately sorry to learn that lives have been ruined by a man whose public face was so greatly at odds to his true character. It has clearly taken a lot of courage for these women to speak out, after a lifetime of having to hide it.

Today Liberal Democrat Parliamentarians pressed the Government to ban letting agency fees and clamp down on rogue landlords in a Private Members Bill debate in the House of Lords.

Baroness Olly Grender, Liberal Democrat peer and a former senior figure at Shelter, introduced the Renters' Rights Bill to protect the growing number of private renters who currently face huge costs every time they move.

A senior German Minister said to me the other day "Whenever I sit down in a room to negotiate with my British colleagues in a European meeting, their first question is always the same - which way to the Exit? You Brits spend so much time trying to find the way out, that you never have the time to build the alliances which are there to be built, to succeed. But now I realise, you would rather go, then win."
